One of our most successful students writes:
“Today, I was given the opportunity to work onset doing makeup for Millennial Magazine. I was really appreciative to be given such amazing experience and get a real taste of the industry. A few weeks before the shoot, myself and another student who was also involved, Aimee, met the director of the shoot/editor-in-chief of the magazine, Berenice Still, to run through models, styling, and the overall look she was hoping to achieve for the magazine. She told us that she wanted it to be mainly pictures, not much writing, so we knew the makeup had to stand out. Berenice emailed us on some mood boards of the kind of looks she wanted, but for some of them we were allowed to get creative and do what we wanted.
A week before the shoot, Aimee and I met once again to run through everything so when the day came we could be clear with what the outcome was to be, and not left wondering and looking unprofessional. We had a list of the models and a picture of each girl. There were about 12 models in total, and a lot of them had 2 looks. So we decided to do 6 each, and for the girls who had 2 looks, we would swap over so that we were each getting equal opportunities to work on as many different skin types as we could. I spent the next couple of days at home and at the library going through pictures and making my own mood board for each girl to ensure it was going to be clear to me on the exactly what I had to do.
The day before the shoot, we found out that the hairdressers who were meant to work on it, could not make it, so we were going to be doing both hair and makeup. I was extremely anxious about it as I knew we were under a time constraint, and I would be pushed to my limit to get hair and makeup done in the same amount of time. But, I put my nerves to one side, and decided I was going to do it and do it well. I was taught well, and at the end of the day, I could only do my best.
When shoot day came, I was nervous and excited. I felt like I was being thrown in the deep end with so many models, so many different looks, ethnicities and both hair and makeup to be done. But as soon as I got started, all the worries left me. I knew that I would not have been recommended for the job by Veronica, if she had not believed that I was capable of doing it. I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of the day. I could not have been happier with the way each model turned out, and getting great feedback from Berenice when we were finished was the perfect ending to an amazing day. She told us that what we had created was exactly how she had imagined everything to look, if not better. I know that is down to the way I was taught. Veronica trained us to have an eye for detail and be able to criticise and perfect our own work, so that everything we do is as close to perfect as it can possibly be.
Every time I am given the opportunity for work experience from Veronica, I always surprise myself in how much I achieve. Each job I do, I love more than the last. For now, I plan on getting as much work experience as I possibly can, to build up a portfolio that I am proud of. I am so grateful for every chance I get from Veronica, and I look forward to the next one”.
