I visited the MAKUP Academy today to see the students in action and ask them about their experience so far.

Veronica’s latest group have now completed 7 weeks of their 16 week course – and they cannot believe how the time has flown!

The students are very proud of their developing skills and are showcasing the looks they are creating on social media. As well as personally receiving compliments on Instagram and Facebook, the MAKUP trainees are thrilled to hear the positive comments passed by members of the industry who follow Veronica’s work.

The warm but professional studio is a hive of calm, focused activity. All the students are working in pairs, today creating a ’60’s inspired look, with a great deal of backcombing and black eye-liner planned!

First I chatted with Daisy and Abby:

Daisy “I’ve really enjoyed studying the different period and eras. The course is exceeding my expectations. Plus it’s great to learn simple but vital tips, like the importance of layering”.

Abby agreed “I didn’t know exactly what to expect, but I’ve loved every minute. For example, the wigs and knotting segment was very hard. But everyone threw themselves into it – and I really enjoyed it in the end!”.

Next I asked Nancy and Elly a few questions:

Nancy “I spent 3 years on a university degree and came away still feeling unconfident in at least 2 modules. In 7 weeks Veronica has taught me more and helped me understand even those tricky modules. The way Veronica teaches makes all the difference – she explains, then she demonstrates and then she encourages you to practise. It’s the best way to learn!

Elly said “I didn’t know there were so many options in makeup and hair design. Veronica has expanded my knowledge of not just the subject itself, but the variety of ways it is used in the industry. And I think I have found my niche – I am totally in love with wigs and knotting! I’m also particularly looking forward to getting to grips with SFX”.

Finally it was the turn of Sam and Aimee:

Sam “Veronica is lovely and she really tries to bring out the best in you. I feel like she is preparing us for working in the industry, and her training is very personalised and hands-on”.

Aimee commented “the course is much harder than I expected and there are so many more skills to learn – but that is great. Veronica challenges us in good way. I’ve loved learning about such a variety of periods and I’m very much looking forward to the theatre module”.

It is lovely to see the students so happy, practicing their skills and filled with confidence in respect of what they have already learned.
