Veronica McAleer and the MAKUP Academy for Film & Media Makeup are celebrating a wave of success for recent graduates.

Veronica set up the MAKUP Academy two years ago, to offer high quality, intensive and practical training in all aspects of hair design and makeup for film and TV. All students receive personal attention from award-winning Veronica, who still regularly works as Personal Hair and Makeup Artist to the actor Paul Bettany. This year, Veronica and successful graduates have been working as part of the core team in the Crowd Hair and Makeup Department on Tim Burton’s live action remake of the classic Disney film ‘Dumbo’. The combination of exceptional training and hands-on work experience enhances the students’ prospective career opportunities and has resulted in unmatched levels of student success.

Jessica Southall won first place in both Makeup and Hair in the Fantasy – Star Wars – Category in the 2016 “National Makeup Artists Competition”.

Lance Breakwell beat contenders from across the UK to be crowned the nation’s best up-and-coming stylist in “Create the Look 2017”. Furthermore, following recent work experience on Tim Burton’s “Dumbo”, Lance has been taken on as Head Trainee on the first big film production to be shot in Saudi Arabia.

Kara McAleer beat 100s to win a place on Creative Skillset’s HETV Trainee Finder, which has helped place new talent on UK dramas including Downton Abbey, Mr Selfridge, Sherlock, The Night Manager, Happy Valley and Game of Thrones.

Following paid work on One Love (the Bob Marley Musical) at the Birmingham Repertory Theatre, Lizzie Neary has landed a dream two-year apprenticeship at the Birmingham Royal Ballet.

Veronica said “I’m committed to fostering the talent, dedication and ambition of the next generation of film and TV makeup artists. I am incredibly proud of all my graduates, and absolutely delighted by the stunning success of my talented students”.

The MAKUP Academy in Birmingham offers two 16-week, Intensive Set Ready courses per year, aimed at beginners and improvers. In addition to outstanding training, MAKUP students receive professional portfolios when they graduate, unique training on set etiquette and continuity skills, and relevant industry work experience. Also, short courses are available for those wanting refresher or top-up training in specific areas and the Academy offers 1-day taster courses.
