Film Makeup Courses

As a film makeup artist, you could be working with the chief make-up artist on feature films, commercials or pop promos. You might be applying makeup and overseeing makeup continuity. You will probably be working with professional makeup products including facial hair and small prosthetics.

Does this appeal to you? Do you have good communication and diplomacy skills? Are you able to cope with stress, and keep a positive attitude? Are you physically fit and able to cope with the long hours involved? Can you be tactful, sensitive and patient? Are you flexible, good at creative problem solving and do you have a keen eye for details? If you can answer “yes” to all of the above, then training to be a film and TV makeup artist might be perfect for you!

Fortunately, The MAKUP Academy offers exceptional yet affordable training in all aspects of hair design and makeup for film and TV. Veronica McAleer, the internationally-acclaimed founder, originally trained in makeup and hair design at BBC Pebble Mill in Birmingham. She has worked on over 40 films and countless television programmes. Veronica has designed hair and makeup for 26 feature films working with actors such as Dame Judi Dench, Michael Caine, Keira Knightly, Colin Firth and Jennifer Connolly.

Crucially, Veronica does most of the makeup artist training herself. This hands-on approach has the additional benefit for students that they receive personal guidance and mentoring from one of the top celebrity makeup artists who is still working in the industry. Veronica’s expertise means that she truly is the best possible teacher in this field at the moment. Now is a golden opportunity for serious students of film and TV makeup to be trained by this BBC-bred expert.

MAKUP provides high–quality, intensive makeup artist courses augmented by practical work experience. Each of these elements enhances every student’s understanding, skills, portfolio and career opportunities.

One of Veronica’s missions is to highlight the technical skills actually entailed in the world of specialist hair and media makeup. To succeed, a professional media makeup artist needs a broad set of skills plus the right ability, aptitude and attitude.

MAKUP courses are delivered in small classes of 8-10 students which ensures a personalised learning experience. In addition, students receive unique training on Set Etiquette, Continuity Skills and Portfolio Building. Finally, there is no need for students to pack up their station, it is yours for the duration of the course – continual days spent training on the same module ensure retention and progression.

Films come in a wide range of genres including action, comedy, drama, fantasy, horror, romance, sci-fi, thriller and western. Similarly, film makeup covers a broad spectrum of skills and abilities including SFX, Hair and Wigs, Prosthetics, Facial Hair and Knotting, Period Makeup, Haircutting and Barbering and Contemporary Hair and Makeup.

MAKUP provides a 16-week, Intensive Set Ready course aimed at beginners and improvers. However short Film Makeup courses are available for those wanting refresher or top-up training in specific areas and the Academy also offers a 1-day taster course.
