MODULE OVERVIEW

This course is a comprehensive introduction to the basics of contemporary media makeup and hair. You will learn important skills such as how to use an airbrush, along with more traditional beauty and corrective makeup techniques for both men and women.

You’ll find out more about hair equipment, styling products and hair pieces, and discover how to create interest, movement, shape and texture. You will study how fashion and style effect colour and cuts. From light, bouncy styles to long, sweeping looks, from large curling waves to sophisticated updos – explore how to create these styles for celebrities, film stars and supermodels.

This contemporary hair and makeup course is also perfect for those who wish to embark on careers in freelance bridal hair and makeup, retail makeup artistry, photographic makeovers and event hair and makeup.

WHAT YOU’LL LEARN

  • Health and safety good practice when using products and tools
  • Skin care, including cleansing
  • How to achieve perfect eyes, lips, cheeks and flawless skin
  • Basic facial anatomy for contouring, shading, highlighting, correction and camouflage (including tattoo camouflage)
  • An introduction to airbrush: set-up, maintenance and the application of foundation, contouring and highlighting
  • Eyebrow shaping, the application of false eyelashes (both individual and strip), how to use a variety of eyeliners
  • Male makeup and grooming
  • Hair and styling techniques using blow dryers, tongs, straightening irons and heated rollers, plus a range of hair products
  • How to create up and down styles, and the use of hairpieces and extensions to compliment a hairstyle
  • The importance of lighting
  • How to ask the right questions to enable you to tailor-make your makeup choice to match your brief

16 Week Intensive Set Ready Course

16th March 2020– 24th July 2020 – £8,500 (dates include three weeks of school holidays).

21th September 2020– 29th January 2021 – £8,500 (dates include three weeks of school holidays).

Need to know

How do I get started?

Enrolling at MAKUP is easy – just fill in the form online or call us if you have any queries. You must be 18 or over to study at MAKUP. However, there is no age limit!

What happens next?

If you are accepted, you will then be asked to pay a deposit of 10% of the relevant course fee. This will secure your place. This deposit is non–refundable. Six weeks prior to commencement you will be asked to pay the balance in full.

Please note as a special exemption,to accommodate January 2016 PCDL applicants,the balance less the deposit can be paid no later than one week before the course commences. Potential students applying on this basis will also receive their deposit back in full if they cannot secure a PCDL.

All other applicants must comply with our regular terms and conditions. We accept payment by credit or debit card. Please ring our office on 01212 965 230.

Late bookings must be paid for in full.

What qualifications do I need?

None — we start with the basics.

All you need is passion, a conscientious and positive attitude, and the ability to take constructive criticism.

Will I receive a certificate?

Upon completion of the course, you will be awarded with a Certificate of Completion for your relevant course.

How many students per class?

The classes will be limited to ten students, maximising your contact time with Veronica and the other tutors.

Will there be work opportunities for me after I graduate?

Veronica will use her bank of industry contacts to help you as much as possible with work experience once you have completed your course.

Unpaid work as a makeup trainee may well be the bulk of your opportunities at the start, which will help you to build on your existing skills; as well as providing you with invaluable contacts.

Can I come in for a chat and a look at the studio?

We host regular open days, where you can look around the studio, chat to current students and try out some mini workshops. Visit the Dates And Events page for details of our next open day.

What's included in the price?

All products are provided as part of the course price. All the products are currently used in the industry, and can be found in Veronica’s own makeup kit.

What are the teaching hours?

All modules run from 10.00am to 4.30pm, Monday to Friday.

Do you provide accommodation?

We do not provide accommodation. However, with three universities, Birmingham is very student–friendly city, and you won’t struggle to find affordable accommodation.

Do we have models?

For the majority of the course, students practice on each other. During the Portfolio sections of the course, you will need to bring in your own models.

Would an FdA or a BA course in make–up be more beneficial?

No. The makeup industry is a practical environment, and the training we provide gives hands on experience and learning in the practical assets of the job. With Veronica’s years of experience and industry contacts, you won’t be missing out.

Contemporary makeup is all about creating unique and beautiful looks. Today’s media makeup incorporates flawless, dewy skin, magical contouring and no-makeup makeup effects. Learn how to produce glamorous looks and avant-garde catwalk makeup. Develop your skills and learn how to play with colour and texture, whether for live shows, to be seen on-screen or for high-fashion photo shoots.

This course will give you the confidence to work on a variety of media looks suitable for red carpet events, press junkets, media presenters, TV talk shows, and male grooming.

On the contemporary hair and makeup course you will learn skin care, including cleansing, plus health and safety good practice when using products and tools.

You will be taught how to achieve perfect eyes, lips, cheeks and flawless skin and basic facial anatomy for contouring, shading, highlighting, correction and camouflage (including tattoo camouflage).

During the course you will receive an introduction to the airbrush including set-up, maintenance and the application of foundation, contouring and highlighting. You will also learn eyebrow shaping, the application of false eyelashes (both individual and strip) and how to use a variety of eyeliners.

Male makeup and grooming is also covered during the course, which is essential in today’s world of men’s masks, Korean Beauty, male concealers and more brands going genderless.

Contemporary hair and styling techniques and taught, using blow dryers, tongs, straightening irons and heated rollers, plus a range of hair products. You will learn how to create up and down styles, and the use of hairpieces and extensions to compliment a hairstyle.

You will discover the importance of lighting and how to ask the right questions to enable you to tailor your makeup design to perfectly match your brief.

Ultimately you will create a series of looks: a natural day makeup look, a bridal image, a classic smoky eye and a “red carpet” image – all of which will be captured professionally during a two-day photo shoot for your portfolio.
