Emmy and RTS award winning MUA Veronica, founder of the MAKUP Academy, shares her thoughts on the hair and makeup on display on the red carpet at the 89th Academy Awards.
“There were some really nice, fresh make-up looks at the Oscars this year.
There were also some classic sultry red lips (which were also popular last year), but with a deeper brown hue – Emma Stone who won Best Actress for her role as Mia in La La Land is a good example. The 1920’s flapper-style dress that Emma wore may have also been the inspiration behind her marcel/finger-waved hairstyle.
In general, however, lips seemed to be more natural, with a slight 1960’s nude feel. And not only was the emphasis on natural lips, but contouring was kept to a minimum too, allowing for stronger definition around the eyes while keeping the the overall feel from becoming too heavy. Naomi Harris, star of Moonlight (picture), wore this look really well.
The emphasis was on simple natural hairstyles, which perfectly matched the more natural make-up looks. The backcombed hairdo’s of last year were definitely left behind.”
